The Master's Life

Inauguration (summer, 26 AD)  Sections 21-27

21. The ministry of John the Baptist

Picture
In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar; when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea; and Herod was tetrarch of Galilee; and his brother Philip was tetrarch of the region of Iturea and Trachonitis; and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene; during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas; the word of God came to John the Baptist, the son of Zechariah in the wilderness.

He went into all the region around the Jordan River, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. In those days John the Baptist came into the wilderness of Judea proclaiming, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.” For he is the one about whom Isaiah the prophet had spoken. As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet,

Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way,The voice of one shouting in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make his paths straight.
Every valley will be filled,
and every mountain and hill will be brought low,
and the crooked will be made straight,
and the rough ways will be made smooth,
and all humanity will see the salvation of God.’”

In the wilderness John the baptizer began preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. People from the whole Judean countryside, all the region around the Jordan, and all of Jerusalem were going out to him, and he was baptizing them in the Jordan River as they confessed their sins. John wore a garment made of camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.

But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, and to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, “You offspring of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Therefore produce fruit that proves your repentance, and don’t think you can begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God can raise up children for Abraham from these stones!  Even now the ax is laid at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”

So the crowds were asking him, “What then should we do?” John answered them, “The person who has two tunics must share with the person who has none, and the person who has food must do likewise.”

Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, “Teacher, what should we do?” He told them, “Collect no more than you are required to.”

Then some soldiers also asked him, “And as for us – what should we do?” He told them, “Take money from no one by violence or by false accusation, and be content with your pay.”

While the people were filled with anticipation and they all wondered whether perhaps John could be the Christ, John answered them all, proclaiming,  “I baptize you with water, for repentance, but one more powerful than I am is coming after me – I am not worthy to bend down, untie the strap of his sandals and carry them. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand to clean out his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his storehouse, but the chaff he will burn up with inextinguishable fire.”

And in this way, with many other exhortations, John proclaimed good news to the people.

22. The baptism of Jesus

Picture
Then Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee to John to be baptized by him in the Jordan River. But John tried to prevent him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you come to me?” So Jesus replied to him, “Let it happen now, for it is right for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John yielded to him.

When all the people were baptized, Jesus was also baptized by John in the Jordan River. After Jesus was baptized, just as he was coming up out of the water praying, he saw the heavens splitting apart and the Holy Spirit descending on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my one dear Son; in you I take great delight.”

23. The temptation of Jesus

Picture
Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan Riverand was immediately led by the Spirit into the wilderness, with wild animals, to endure temptations by the devil. He was in the wilderness for forty days, enduring temptations from Satan. After he fasted forty days and forty nights he was famished.

The tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become bread.” But he answered, “It is written, ‘Man does notlive bybreadalone, butbyeverywordthat comes fromthe mouthof God.’”

Then the devil took him to Jerusalem the holy city, had him stand on the highest point of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written, ‘He will commandhisangelsconcerningyou, to protect you’ and ‘withtheir handsthey will liftyouup, so thatyou willnotstrikeyourfootagainsta stone.’” Jesus said to him, “Once again it is written: ‘You arenotto putthe LordyourGodto the test.’”

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him in a flash all the kingdoms of the world and their grandeur. And he said to him, “I will give you all these things and the glory that goes along with them (for they has been relinquished to me and I can give them to anyone I wish) if you throw yourself to the ground and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go away, Satan! For it is written: ‘You are to worshipthe LordyourGodandserve only him.’”

So when the devil had completed every temptation, the devil left him until a more opportune time, and angels came and began ministering to his needs.

24. The testimony of John the Baptist

Picture
Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”  He confessed – he did not deny but confessed – “I am not the Christ!”  So they asked him, “Then who are you?  Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not!”  “Are you the Prophet?”  He answered, “No!” Then they said to him, “Who are you? Tell us so that we can give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

John said, “I am the voice of one shouting in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”  (Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) So they asked John, “Why then are you baptizing if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

John answered them, “I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not recognize, who is coming after me. I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandal!” These things happened in Bethany across the Jordan River where John was baptizing.

25. John the Baptist identifies Jesus as the Lamb

Picture
On the next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is the one about whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who is greater than I am, because he existed before me.’ I did not recognize him, but I came baptizing with water so that he could be revealed to Israel.”

Then John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending like a dove from heaven, and it remained on him. And I did not recognize him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining – this is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ I have both seen and testified that this man is the Chosen One of God.”

26. Jesus' first followers

Picture
Again the next day John was standing there with two of his disciples.  Gazing at Jesus as he walked by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”  When John’s two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.  Jesus turned around and saw them following and said to them, “What do you want?”  So they said to him, “Rabbi” (which is translated Teacher), “where are you staying?”  Jesus answered, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. Now it was about four o’clock in the afternoon.

Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two disciples who heard what John said and followed Jesus.  He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah!” (which is translated Christ).  Andrew brought Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon, the son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter).

On the next day Jesus wanted to set out for Galilee.  He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.”  (Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the town of Andrew and Peter.)  Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the law, and the prophets also wrote about – Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”  Nathanael replied, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?”  Philip replied, “Come and see.”

Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and exclaimed, “Look, a true Israelite in whom there is no deceit!”  Nathanael asked him, “How do you know me?” Jesus replied, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”  Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel!”  Jesus said to him, “Because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”  He continued, “I tell all of you the solemn truth – you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

27. Jesus' first miracle: water into wine

Picture
Now on the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding.  When the wine ran out, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no wine left.” Jesus replied, “Woman, why are you saying this to me?  My time has not yet come.” His mother told the servants, “Whatever he tells you, do it.”

Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washing, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus told the servants, “Fill the water jars with water.” So they filled them up to the very top. Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the head steward,” and they did. When the head steward tasted the water that had been turned to wine, not knowing where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), he called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the cheaper wine when the guests are drunk. You have kept the good wine until now!” Jesus did this as the first of his miraculous signs, in Cana of Galilee. In this way he revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him.

After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples, and they stayed there a few days.
